Tasks

  • Evaluation and characterization of novel antimalarial compounds
  • Investigation of the mechanism and of action and toxicity profile of innovative drug candidates using state-of-the-art in vitro and ex vivo approaches
  • Evaluation of the activity of lead compounds against clinical Plasmodium isolates obtained from malaria patients in Gabon
  • International collaborative research network
  • Possibility to travel to the project partner sites in Europe and Africa

Profile

  • Master’s degree in biological sciences
  • Hands-on laboratory work, including cell culture
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to work independently with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset and a high degree of self-motivation
  • Good team spirit and collaborative personality

About the institute

The ITM – Department VII and Centre of Excellence for Tropical Medicine Baden-Württemberg – is an internationally renowned research institution focusing on infectious diseases and neglected tropical diseases. Tübingen is a partner site of the German Centre for Infection Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Infektionsforschung, DZIF) and hosts the co-coordinators for the research areas Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases, Gastrointestinal Infections, Healthcare-Associated and Antibiotic-Resistant Bacterial Infections as well as Novel Antibiotics. The ITM has long standing collaboration with the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL), Gabon and jointly the two institutes are at the forefront of conducting vaccine and chemotherapy clinical trials for malaria, helminths, emerging viral infections of all phases according to the high-quality standard ICH-GCP guidelines in Germany and Africa. The ITM disposes of a comprehensive portfolio of expertise in basic research, epidemiology and clinical research on globally relevant infectious diseases including parasitoses. Core research activities comprise the pre-clinical and clinical development of novel drug candidates and regimens as well as vaccine candidates to prevent and treat malaria and other globally important infectious diseases.
