The Faculty of Language, Literature and Media Studies (Department of Computational Linguistics and

Digital Humanities, Prof. Dr. Achim Rettinger) invites applications for a

Research Associate (m/f/x)

(E 13 TV-L, 100%, permanent position, starting 1st October 2026)

Your responsibilities

The advertised position in the field of Computational Linguistics includes teaching in linguistics,

computational linguistics, and computer science amounting to 8 teaching hours per week (8 SWS) in

the degree programs B.A. Language, Technology, Media with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and

Computational Linguistics, as well as in the international M.A. Natural Language Processing. Since the

subject area at Trier University has a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning for media

content, theoretical and practical skills in this area are required.

In addition to teaching, the position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Active research on current topics in the field of Natural Language Processing
  • Technical support and user administration of the subject area’s GPU servers and software

libraries for use in research and teaching

  • Support in the procurement and management of the chair’s equipment
  • Acquisition of third-party funding and substantive as well as administrative involvement in

research projects

  • Participation in the academic self-governance of the department
  • Supervision of theses, as well as support for student assistants and doctoral candidates

Your profile

The recruitment requirements are based on Section 57 (2) and (3) of the Higher Education Act of

Rhineland-Palatinate (HochSchG); in particular, applicants are expected to have:

  • An above-average academic university degree (Master’s, Diplom, or equivalent) as well as a

doctorate appropriate to the position in Computational Linguistics or a related discipline

  • At least two years and six months of full-time professional experience after graduation
  • Experience in research-oriented teaching in English and German, as well as in supervising

theses and student assistants

  • Existing publications on current methods and applications in computational linguistics at

relevant conferences in Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning,

as well as experience in reviewing scientific publications; active publication activity and

ambitions for further academic qualification

  • Extensive expertise in both computer science and data science, as well as in linguistics or

media studies

  • Practical skills in the implementation and development of current algorithmic methods in

computational linguistics, machine learning, or artificial intelligence, as well as in conducting

empirical experiments with large datasets such as texts, images, or knowledge graphs on GPU

servers

  • Experience in the support and administration of technical infrastructure for students and

academic staff in modern computational linguistics

  • Experience with university administration in the areas of teaching organization, procurement,

building and equipment services, as well as experience in academic self-governance

  • Ability to work in a team, resilience, and reliability
  • Very good command of English and German, both written and spoken
