The Faculty of Natural Sciences II, Institute of Chemistry, at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg

invites applications for the 3-year position of a

Scientific Coworker (f-m-d)

to be filled part-time (65%), starting November 1, 2025.

Remuneration will be determined based on job duties and responsibilities and will be aligned with the fulfillment of listed personal requirements, up to pay grade 13 under the TV-L (Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen

Dienst der Länder – ‚German Public Service Pay Agreement for the Federal States‘).

This position is located in the Chair of Physical Chemistry – Complex Self-Organizing Systems and is funded

by the “Phospholipid Research center”. The project aims to develop a lipid multilayer model system at the

air-water interface for studying membrane proteins and lipid exchange.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Development and investigation of a lipid multilayer model at the water–air interface.
  • Physicochemical characterization using surface-sensitive and methods, such as film balance techniques, in-

frared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and epifluorescence spectroscopy.

  • Physicochemical characterization of lipid model membranes in suspension, by besides other fluorescence

spectroscopy and EPR spectroscopy

  • Reconstitution and examination of membrane proteins within the developed model systems.
  • Detailed, complex data analysis.
  • Research trips for experiments, e.g., to synchrotron or neutron sources.
  • Publication of results as well as presentations at conferences.
  • Participation in the institute’s teaching duties.

Opportunities for further academic qualification through a doctoral program are available.

Requirements:

  • Diploma or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, or an equivalent university degree
  • Good knowledge of physical chemistry and spectroscopy, especially IR and EPR
  • Ideally, knowledge in membrane biophysics
  • Interest in biophysical research questions
  • Initiative in familiarization with and exploration of a research field
  • Independent and reliable laboratory work
  • Problem-solving ability and capacity for critical and complex data analysis
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, enjoyment in scientific exchange
  • Very good English language skills, both spoken and written.
