Creating Knowledge. Since 1502: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range

of academic subjects in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine. The oldest

and largest university in Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1817 when the University of Wittenberg (founded

in 1502) merged with Friedrichs University Halle (founded in 1694). Today the university has 340

professors and 20,000 students. Research at the university focuses on nano and life sciences, the

Enlightenment, society and culture.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences III, Institute of Geosciences and Geography, Chair of Applied Geology, at

Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is seeking a part-time (50 %)

Doctoral Researcher (m-f-d).

The fixed-term position is available at the earliest possible date until 31 December 2027.

Remuneration will be determined based on job duties and responsibilities and will be aligned with the fulfillment

of listed personal requirements, up to pay grade E13 under the TV-L (Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst der

Länder – ‚German Public Service Pay Agreement for the Federal States‘).

Job Responsibilities:

  • Simulation of flow and transport processes in fractured aquifers
  • Further development of Bayesian methods for calibrating fracture network models (discrete fracture networks, DFNs)
  • Co-supervision of students
  • Publication of high-quality scientific results

Requirements:

  • Completed university degree (Master’s degree, diploma or equivalent) in the natural or engineering sciences (e.g., environmental sciences, geosciences, geophysics, physics, mechanical engineering)
  • Interest in computer-based environmental research
  • Professional knowledge in hydrogeology, modelling and inversion techniques
  • Professional programming knowledge (e.g., in Python or MATLAB)
  • Fluent written and spoken English skills. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, motivation, creativity, and a strong commitment
