The University of Passau owes its strong visibility and good repute to excellent research,

innovative teaching and its tight-knit international academic networks. Some 11,000 students

and more than 1,300 staff study and work on our university campus, which is located a stone’s

throw from the historical Old Town of Passau and combines state-of-the-art technical

infrastructure with award-winning architecture. Internationally successful high-tech companies

and a vibrant start-up scene, coupled with a rich culture and Lower Bavarian traditions, give

Passau and the surrounding area a special appeal that makes it a great place to live and work.

To support the university-wide research area „Digital platforms“, particularly initiated by means

of the DFG Research Training Group 2720, the following position – initially as a fixed-term civilservice post – is to be filled at the School of Business, Economics and Information Systems

of the University of Passau as of 1 April 2027:

Professorship of Information Systems with a focus on Digital Platform Ecosystems

(tenure-track professorship at pay grade W1 with advancement to a tenured W3 post)

The W3 professorship, initially a W1 tenure-track professorship, will represent the subject of

Information Systems in research and teaching.

Applicants should have their research focus in the field of digital platforms or develop this focus

in the future. It is intended that the successful candidate join the DFG Research Training Group

2720 Digital Platform Ecosystems (DPE) and participate in the RTG’s research and qualification

programme.

Strong candidates will demonstrate high potential for international recognition through

publications in top-tier international journals in information systems and related fields (e.g. MIS

Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Management Science). They should also be capable

of addressing information systems research questions with methodological rigour at the highest

level. Candidates should complement the department thematically and methodologically.

Additionally, the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate both the willingness and

potential to secure external (“third-party”) funding and contribute to collaborative and

interdisciplinary research projects – some of which are externally funded.

Involvement in the interdisciplinary teaching portfolio of Information Systems at Bachelor’s,

Master’s and doctoral levels (covering both foundational and advanced topics) is expected.

German language skills are not a prerequisite for appointment, but the post holder must acquire

sufficient proficiency to deliver instruction in German within four years of taking up the post.

Active participation in academic self-governance is also desirable.

The School of Business, Economics and Information Systems is a young faculty that is

particularly innovative and dynamic. Economic and societal relevance, innovation and

interdisciplinarity are the cornerstones of our research activities, which include basic and

application-oriented research as well as knowledge transfer. Our focus areas are Accounting,

Finance and Taxation (AFT), Economics (ECON), Management, Innovation and Marketing

(MIM), Information Systems (WINFO) and Quantitative Methods (QM).

The successful candidate will be educated to doctoral level and have demonstrated both

pedagogical aptitude and academic excellence, whereby the latter is generally established on

the basis of the quality of his or her doctoral research. No more than four years should have

elapsed between the doctorate and the end of the application period. This period is extended

by caregiving periods (see Art. 63(1) BayHIG).

The career path of the tenure-track professorship is governed by the University of Passau’s

regulation on the evaluation of junior professorships and tenure-track professorships dated

8 August 2023. Tenure-track professors are initially appointed as civil servants on a fixed-term

basis for a period of three years. Subject to a positive evaluation, the appointment is extended

to a total duration of six years. Following a favourable final evaluation, the fixed-term tenuretrack professorship is converted into a tenured W3 professorship.

The University of Passau actively promotes equal opportunities for all genders as well as

diversity in the workforce; therefore, applications are welcome from all candidates who fulfil the

requisite qualifications, without regard to gender, cultural or social background, religion, world

view, disability or sexual identity. As the University wishes to raise the proportion of women in

research and teaching, female academics are expressly encouraged to apply. This position is

suitable for candidates with disabilities. Those who are registered disabled are given preference

over non-disabled applicants who do not otherwise have statutory preferential status if their

overall personal aptitudes, skills and qualifications are equal.

To be considered, your application must reach the University by 2 July 2026. Your full

application should include all relevant supporting documents (curriculum vitae, list of

publications with information on manuscripts currently under review, teaching assignments,

teaching evaluations, etc.) and should preferably be sent by e-mail to bewerbung.wiwi@unipassau.de. It should be addressed to the Dean of the School of Business, Economics and

Information Systems of the University of Passau, Professor Suleika Bort, 94030 Passau. When

e-mailing your application, all application documents should be attached in a single pdf file.

E-mailed applications are kept on file for six months after the conclusion of the appointment

procedure, whereupon they are deleted from our systems.
