We are looking for a
Student Research Assistant – Digital Law and Energy (gn)
(10 hours/week)
The contract is intended to commence as of 01 November 2026 the earliest and is limited to 6 months.
The successful candidate will be part of the Data Science Lab and the Hertie School Centre for Sustainability.
is looking for a student research assistant to assist with in-depth policy analysis on aspects relating to digital and data law, as applied in the energy sector.
AI-EFFECT will establish a European Testing and Experimentation Facility (TEF) for artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the energy sector. The 3-year project is implemented by a consortium, consisting of 19 leading European organizations under the coordination of EPRI Europe. The project is supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program.
Within the task at Hertie School, led by Prof. Lynn Kaack, we investigate the long-term governance of the project, and analyze regulatory barriers and enables of machine learning applications in the energy sector more broadly.

Your tasks:
  • Support with creating policy guidelines for energy sector stakeholders who look to integrate AI in their processes to assist with regulatory compliance as part of AI-EFFECT
  • Coordinate closely with consortium partners and attend consortium meetings
  • Provide background research on digital and energy law, and regulation of AI
  • If interested, contribute to an academic publication

Your profile:
  • Enrolled at a German University
  • Undergraduate degree in fields relating to public policy, digitalization, or the energy sector
  • Proficiency in academic research and writing
  • Experience in European digital law, including but not limited to the General Data Protection Regulation, the Digital Services Act, the Digital Markets Act and the AI Act
  • Experience in power systems and energy law and business
  • An interest in machine learning technology and deployment (experience is a plus)
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative, and be a team player

Remuneration: € 15.00 hourly wage
