At Department VI of Trier University (Geosciences Unit, Chair of Hydrology), the following position is
available from September 1st, 2026, or by agreement, for a maximum duration of 6 years:
Research Associate (m/f/d)
(E 13 TV-L, 100%, fixed-term qualification position according to the German Academic Fixed-
Term Contract Act [WissZeitVG], for a maximum duration of 6 years. The position is intended
for further academic qualification.)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and curious researcher with a passion for innovative scientific ideas
and the ambition to develop an independent research profile. Applicants are expected to complement
and actively expand the hydrological research activities at Trier University through creative approaches
and new scientific perspectives.
Possible research areas include e.g. ecohydrology, aquatic biogeochemistry or other related fields. We
explicitly welcome applications from candidates working on data-driven/modelling-based approaches
as well as experimental or laboratory-based research. We are especially interested in early-career scientists who enjoy interdisciplinary thinking, contribute their own ideas, and are eager to help shape emerging research directions.
A modern and versatile research infrastructure is available to support innovative projects. This includes
laboratory facilities and analytical techniques for stable water isotopes, fluorescence spectroscopy, trace
gases, ²²²Radon, as well as FTIR, AAS, ICP-MS, and GC-MS/MS applications.
Your responsibilities
You will pursue your own academic qualification and contribute to the research and teaching activities
of the group through:
- independent planning, implementation and analysis of externally funded research projects
- independent teaching contributions in Hydrology (4 teaching hours per week within the Englishlanguage M.Sc. programme Environmental Sciences and/or the German-language B.Sc. programme Environmental Sciences with a focus on water research, including supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses)
- participation in the administration and further development of the Hydrology group
- engagement in higher education teaching development and academic self-governance
Your profile
The formal employment requirements are defined by § 57 (2) and (3) of the Higher Education Act of
Rhineland-Palatinate (HochSchG). Applicants are expected to hold an above-average university degree
(Master’s, Diplom, or equivalent) in Hydrology, Geoecology, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geosciences, or a related field, as well as a completed doctorate in hydrology, geoecology, environmental
sciences, or related natural or engineering sciences.
