About us
The position is part of the strategic partnership between the Carl von Ossietzky Universität and the University of Groningen, supported in part by a major initiative funded with €22.5 million from Niedersachsen’s Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) and the Volkswagen Foundation for the project “A Programme for Excellence. Developing Strengths and Building Potential through Interdisciplinary and International Networking”. This initiative includes networking across regional and national borders, supporting students and early-career researchers, and strengthening interdisciplinary research priorities in socially relevant and innovative fields.
As part of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Institute of Sport Science and its departments are dedicated to research and teaching on central issues relating to sport and movement, education, society and training. The „Sport and Movement Science“ department of the Institute of Sport Science, headed by Prof. Dr. Jörg Schorer, is interested in understanding and researching sport motor and sport psychological phenomena in sport and other fields like talent in sport, decision-making and perception. In research and teaching, approaches from sports motor skills and sports psychology (including eye movement and whole-body movement analyses) as well as related sub-disciplines of sports science and other scientific disciplines are applied. Fortunately, our „Sport and Movement Science“ department was able to move into the premises in the newly constructed lab building at the end of 2024. This change offers great opportunities for both research and teaching.
Your tasks
- Conduct research in cooperation with both scientific partners and the applied party, the KNSB (Royal Dutch Speed Skating Association)
- Collect, manage, and analyse performance data of speed skaters
- Work on your PhD by writing scientific and applied papers on the project resulting in a PhD-thesis
- Write reports for the both scientific partners and the applied party on the development of the project
- Bridge the gap between science and practice while developing practical, applicable products
- Integrate into the work groups in Germany and the Netherlands
- Present the project on (inter-)national conferences
- Present the project in coach meetings
- Implementing and embedding the project with coaches
Your profile
Required qualifications
- Master, diploma or Staatsexamen in sport science or a closely related field
- Solid background in talent research and applied practice.
- Strong English language skills
- Strong communication skills with our applied partners
- Interest in talent research in speed skating
Preferred qualifications
- German and/or Dutch language skills
- Experience in publishing or presentation of sport science
- Experience as embedded scientist working with talented athletes and their coaches
- Affinity with elite sports
- Strong team work abilities
- With a strong practice-oriented mindset, you translate research and insights into solutions that are directly applicable in the field.

Further information
The University of Oldenburg offers PhD students the opportunity to undertake a binational PhD programme. This enables them to study and conduct research at two different locations within an international context. Doctoral students enrol at both the University of Oldenburg and the University of Groningen, conducting research in equal measure at both locations. Supervision during the research phase is provided jointly by both institutions and upon successful completion, a double degree is awarded.
Binational PhD programmes are aimed at aspiring researchers who would like to work in an international context and/or have an interest in cross-border research. In addition to the wide range of opportunities, PhD candidates benefit in particular from intensive supervision, a larger research infrastructure and comprehensive insight into the research culture of the respective institutions and countries. The research will be conducted in cooperation with the Royal Dutch Speed Skating Association, KNSB.
