The Department of Efficient Energy Use at the Institute for Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use (IER) at the University of Stuttgart is seeking to fill a position for a student/research assistant (m/f/d) in the Data Centres research group.

Data centres consume enormous amounts of energy, a significant proportion of which is used for cooling alone. This is precisely where the SMART-KS research project comes in: a digital twin maps the entire cooling infrastructure down to the individual components, enabling energy optimisations to be simulated and evaluated. For this to succeed, reliable technical data on real components currently available on the market is required.

Based on this task, a temporary assistant is to be recruited in the short term to assist with the systematic market analysis and compilation of technical operating data for components of the cooling infrastructure.

Your responsibilities:

  • Identification of key manufacturers by technology and derivation of relevant performance classes
  • Requesting and obtaining technical documentation (data sheets and/or performance curves) from manufacturers
  • Structuring and processing the collected raw data
  • Aligning the data structure with the requirements of the simulation platform

We offer:

  • An insight into current research on the energy efficiency of data centres
  • Flexible working hours, with a monthly workload of 30–40 hours
  • Practical experience in data analysis and visualisation
  • The option to undertake a research project afterwards

Your profile:

  • Current studies in energy engineering or a related subject
  • A basic technical understanding of refrigeration machines, cooling systems or heat transfer would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of German is required
  • An interest in energy efficiency, data centres and modelling
