The Centre for Language, Cognition and Computation (CLaCC) is inviting applications for the following position

commencing the earliest possible time.

Academic research assistant (m/f/x)

Reference number W2904, salary in accordance with the German TV-L salary scale1, pay grade: E13 TV- L, duration

of employment: until 31.12.2028, volume of employment: 100 % of standard working time.

Workplace/Department:

Text+ is a collaborative project funded under the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI; text-plus.org/). As part

of Text+, you will be part of a geographically distributed network of research groups, focusing on the integration of

large language models (LLMs) into data preparation and analysis in the field of Digital Humanities (DH). At Saarland

University, you will be based at the Centre for Language, Cognition and Computation (ClaCC) and be part of Prof. E.

Teich’s research group within the Department of Language Science and Technology (LST; www.unisaarland.de/fachrichtung/lst.html).

Job requirements and responsibilities:

  • Application and comparison of language models for specific digital humanities tasks (e.g. text annotation)
  • Adaptation of language models to different registers/text types
  • Evaluation of language models with regard to bias
  • Development of LM-based processing pipelines for users in the humanities
  • Publication record in relevant areas

TV-L = collective agreement on remuneration of public sector employees in the German Länder

The pay grade assigned to an employee depends on their professional qualifications and the number of years of service. Each pay grade is

further subdivided into levels. Entry-level employees with no previous experience will initially be assigned a level 1 rating. After one year at

level 1 of the E10 pay grade, an employee will move up to level 2. After a further two years, the employee will move to level 3, etc.

Your academic qualifications:

  • Completed university studies in computational linguistics, digital humanities or computer science
  • Language skills (according to GER): Fluent in spoken and written German and English (C1)

The successful candidate will also be expected to:

  • Have excellent knowledge of how to use large language models, particularly in the field of digital humanities
  • Have solid programming skills, particularly in Python
  • Have experience with relevant platforms, e.g. PyTorch, spaCy
  • Have teamwork skills
  • Language skills (according to GER): The working language of the Text+ Consortium is German, so a very good

command of German is required. In addition, a very good command of English (C1) is required.

Pay grade classification is based on the particular details of the position held and the extent to which the applicant meets the

requirements of the pay grade within the TV-L salary scale. Part-time employment is generally possible.
