At the University of Göttingen – Public Law Foundation – we offer two positions at the research group of Prof. Dr. Axel Munk, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Institute for Mathematical Stochastics, starting October 1, 2026

– 50 % of pay grade 13 TV-L –

 The vacancy is limited for 3 years. 
About us: We develop novel methodology for statistical data analysis at the cutting edge to optimization and applications in the natural sciences. 
The position: PhD in Mathematical Statistics The position will be funded by the DFG research unit RI 5381 “Mathematical Statistics in the Information Age”, see https://for5381.uni-freiburg.de/en/research-unit-5381

You will conduct research in collaboration with members of the RU 5381 which deals with statistically efficient methods under computational constraints. In the subproject at the Göttingen site you will develop tools for change point and spatial data analysis using techniques from statistical optimal transport. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in our study program, which includes special lectures and seminars, annual workshops, regular meetings with other PhD students as well as with your thesis advisory committee. 

Your profile: As a successful candidate, you
•    hold an excellent or very good Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, 
•    have strong interest and background in mathematical statistics and optimization, preferably in statistical optimal transport and/or change point and spatial data analysis
•    are proficient in written and spoken English,
•    have gained experience in programming and data analysis (e.g., Python, R, C++).
