Saarland University is a campus university with an international focus and a streng research profile. lts four
oore research areas ‚Computer Science‘, ‚BioMed -Life and Materials‘, ‚lnterdisciplinary European Research‘
and ‚Sustainability‘ are defining features of the university. With numerous internationally respected research
institutes situated in the vicinity of the university and dedicated support for start-up companies, 5.!arland
University is an ideal environment for research, teaching and innovation. The proportion of international
students studying at Saar1and University is weil above the national average and is testimony to the
university’s strong intern,:1tional focus. S;,arl;;md Univer5ity has been officially certified c1s c1 fämily-friendly
universitysince 2004.
The Eoculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland University brings together numerous disciplines
under one organizational umbreßa with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in tE!<lching,
fundamental and exploratory research and in the development of practical applicatioos. The Department of
Materials Science and Engineering is active in the key research fields ‚Multifunctional Materialsand Systems‘,
‚Sustainability and the Circular Economy‘ and ‚Digit.aHzation, Data and Al‘, all of which are constantly
evolving and strongly represented in the faculty’s academic Curricula.
The Department is a major contributor to the university-wide core research area ‚Sust.ainability‘ and is
helping to actively shape the regional transformation project ‚Circular Saar‘ -a key initiative in Saarland that
aims to advance a resource-efficient circular economy. The aim is to work closely with regional partners from
academia, industry and the public sector to develop innovative materials-science solutions for closed-loop
material cycles, recyding strategies and sust.ainable manufacturing processes. The professorship being
advertised will make a major contribution to the project’s scientific profile and visibility, and will strengthen
Saarland University’s role as a catalyst for sustainable regional transformation.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the Faculty cf Natural Sciences and Technology at
Saarland University is inviting applications for the following position to commence at the earliest possible
opportunity:

(m/f/x; Reference no.: W2675)
This professorial position is a fixed-term public sector appointment (‚Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit‘) for a
maximum period of six years. lf the tenure evaluation procedure {teaching appraisal and external assessment
of research work) is positive, the appointee will be promoted to a permanent professorship (fetime tenure)
at the German academic salary scale W3.
The University is also inviting applications for four further professorships in the fields cf Product
DIIIWllopmant and Clrcularity-Drfvan DKign (m/f/x; reference no.: W276S), Sustainabla Matallurgy and
Structural Mahlrials In a Clrcular Economy m/f/x, reference no.: W2764), Appllad Machanlcs {m/f/x;
reference no.: W2677) and Advanced Recycling Processes for Circular Material Flows (m/f/x:, reference
no.: W2763). Applicants whose research focus is between any of these areas are encouraged to submit a
separate application to each professorship position for which their scientific profile is suitable.
This professorship covers the field of modern functional materials, focusing strongly on sust.ainclbility, the
circular economy clnd resource-efficient technologies. lt wil be a central element of the depcirtment’s future
strategic research priorities: Multifunctional Materials & Systems; Sustainability and the Circular Economy;
Digitalization, Dat.a and Al. lhe person appointed to this position will advance research spanning multiple
material classes in the areas of hierarchkally structured functional materials and/or functional hybrid
materials for sustainability and energy applications. Potential research topics include: adaptive and
switchable meta-materials: 20-and 30-organized functional materials as platforms for catalyst or electrode
materials; solid-state electrolytes; and materials for hydrogen storage. Werk in these fields wil encompass
the development, experimental investigation and evaluation of functional materials with a view to improved
resource efficiency and lower carbon footprints. The person appointed will also be expected to develop
strategies that enhance the circularity, recyclability and reuse of modern materials (‚design for recycling‘),
and to partkipate in research dat.a management initiatives.
Your te.iching duties will cover the field of functional materials with partkular emphasis on sustainable
technologies. In the fixed-term W2 phase of the professorship, you wil be expected to contribute
substantially to core teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes (e.g. ceramic and glasses,
functional matericlls, 3D analysis cf microstructures). In the subsequent W3 phase, you will establish a new
